Career Path
This qualification enables students to graduate as Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL Teachers) whether it is in their native countries or abroad.
This course is ideal for:
- Teachers seeking further qualifications in ESL / EFL
- Foreign English teachers who want to learn new/different language teaching skills
- Australian graduates planning to travel overseas and teach English or move into the TESOL field in Australia
- Returnees from overseas who have taught English but now need to gain a qualification to continue their career in Australia
- Individuals who are in a position where they need to better understand the difficulty migrants experience in Australia due to linguistically diverse demands.
Most of this student group intend to use their qualification immediately after graduation and initially seek an intensive practical course. The Certificate lV in TESOL trains participants in basic competencies of teaching English. Graduates of this course will meet the minimum TESOL specialist qualifications requirements for entry level teaching positions.
The Certificate IV in TESOL is a valuable qualification for teachers who have a Bachelor of Education and who wish to gain a TESOL qualification that can be regarded as a TESOL "strand" of their educational qualification. The ESL curriculum frameworks in Australia, including the national ESL curriculum, the CSWE (Certificates in Spoken and Written English), will accept the Certificate IV in TESOL as an add-on for teachers wishing to teach ESL to migrants.
The Certificate IV in TESOL is a short intensive course that offers basic training in teaching English to speakers of other languages. Participants will be given a brief introduction to techniques of classroom management and assessment, and a more thorough introduction to presentation techniques, lesson preparation and analysing language for communicative and IELTS purposes. The course is highly practical and a major emphasis will be practice teaching. Participants will work collaboratively to prepare and teach lessons, progressing to taking sole responsibility for a two‑hour lesson.
